I bought this laptop three months ago, so I should be able to give it a good review having used it every day since the purchase date. I am a laptop user, I don't like desktops because I am always on the move and I need my files on one computer to grab and go. Whether it be work related or a LAN party. So far I have to used it to play UT2004(all graphics on max), Splinter Cell & Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, Counter-Strike Condition Zero, and a few others. It plays them well. I was definitely impressed as I heard that the P25 can't play games that well due to the 64 meg video card. The blue housing is beautiful. The screen in huge and definitely viewable from all angles. The wi-fi works great and is backwards adaptable to 801.11 B and A standards. It does all the tasks that I require flawlessly. Also the speakers sound great, they are definitely loud and clear. The placement of them also allows games and movies to be heard as though two speakers were behind your head for a surround sound feeling. Also the DVD burner is an excellent addition. Being able to add files to a RW DVD then delete them later is like having the equivalent of 8 cd's packed into one at your disposal. All in all I highly recommend this computer but I do have some complaints. First, the screen is a little dim. During DVD playing or game playing I don't notice it though. Second, I don't really like this border around the keyboard, they could have made the keyboard bigger. Third, the speakers have a lot of treble but no bass. For the price I paid they could have slipped in a subwoofer like the previous models. Other than those 3 gripes I consider this laptop a top performer and tough competition for those who are in the market for the Apple 17 inch screen G5's or any laptop for that matter.

I got this laptop almost two months ago to replace my HP dv series that had problem after problem and completely failed after only 1.5 years. So far I love it. It is a dependable and reliable computer that is easy to carry around (light, and fits in a normal backpack) but yet is sturdy. It runs smoothly, alhtough it could use more memory - at the moment I am not having troubles with programs, but I can forsee in the next couple of years there will be trouble with memory and speed.

Downsides of course are that there is no DVD/CD drive (which, after researching several different brands, seems to be normal nowadays for anything smaller than a 15 in laptop....), the sound quality, and the fingeprints. This is easily solved by using my old desktop speakers and keeping a soft cloth next to my computer.

The keyboard is fun to type on (although it takes a little bit to get used to) and I haven't been having any of the troubles with the mousepad that other people hvae been descirbing, although the buttons are rather far to the sides, and it is good to turn it off while typing as the hands hit the mouse pad.

Also good is the battery life and that it runs really cool. I think overheating was one of the main problems of my old laptop and the reason why my equipment kept failing. So far, I've only gotten about 7 hours out of the battery (not 9 like advertised), but I'm not complaining. On my old laptop I was lucky to get 45 minutes! I am hoping to get several good years out of this laptop.

I bought this shortly after I went out on my own contract programming. I liked the bigger screen because it was replacing my desktop. So far I've been extremely pleased with it, aside from the keyboard. I use it many hours every day, travel with it regularly, work at home and at various coffee shops, etc.

The screen is excellent - and plenty bright even on battery. After a year the battery still gets about the same amount of time as it did originally - around two hours under normal use. I am usually on AC.

The only thing I am unhappy with is the keyboard. If you have to type a lot and will be depending on the unit's keyboard, I must recommend that you pick a different machine. I can't understand what they were thinking when they designed this -- it is almost like the keyboard was an afterthought. The right shift key, the slash, and the period (not to mention the arrow keys) are so small that you may wear out the backspace key before its time. I can't give you too much information on what else you will run in to - I carry a full size USB keyboard in my bag, which I planned to do anyway as I am not much for laptop keyboards anyway. This setup works out great for me. If the keyboard is not an issue for you, I highly recommend this machine.

Some of the other features I don't use as much: the fingerprint reader is a neat gadget and it works well enough once you get used to it, and get the method down, but it was just something to mess with for me. I don't currently use it.

It has plenty of USB ports, a card reader port, which handles SD (I was delighted to discover when I needed it) and some others. An ample hard drive (160GB) and 2 Gig of memory (this was must for me; I wanted it to handle the applications I was running smoothly, and that was about the max you could find in an out-of-the-box machine at the time). The built-in wireless card works great, it has a firewire port, dvd writer/everything drive that works great. And finally the price seems very good for a machine like this with durability that I trust.

WHY TOSHIBA?

about 6 years ago I did some research which gave me the impression that toshibas, though a bit heavier, had outstanding durability. My first one was (still is) fantastic. I am still running it non-stop on my network, but I needed more memory/speed/disk space. In between my wife bought one which as performed exceptionally as well. I have not been disappointed in any of my Toshibas. The keyboards on the other two were fine, by the way. As far as personal experience, I've seen way too many Dells fail first hand (including one of ours). As far as other brands, I don't have first hand experience, but few looked as good as Toshibas when I researched them, and none for the price.

Before purchasing I had done a great deal of research on both Newegg and Amazon. I had noticed a lot of hit-or-miss responses from those that had purchased Acer and Asus machines. Couldn't find any bad comments on the Toshiba's and although we don't use Toshiba at work the IT Manager here told me they were a solid product. The addition of a 10 key on the new 16 inch notebooks is definitely a great feature and a requirement for me as this laptop's primary function is for a home based business. The screen is very crisp and the fit and finish is excellent. Very good sound from the Harmon Kardon speakers. The only thing that I would like to have is a backlit keyboard.

Toshiba Satellite A355-S6922 16.0-Inch Laptop Review

I have very complaints at all which makes for a boring review I guess. Previously I have owned HP nonebooks one which I still use and in comparison it runs too hot and the fan is contstantly on and noisy. This Toshiba is quiet, and while it can get warm it's one of the coolest I've owned. I've also had Apple laptops which were also too hot. The screen on this is bright and clear. It has nice miniature speakers by harman/kardon on each side of the notebook. The computer runs fast using Photoshop and for general web browsing. The wireless works great with my wireless Buffalo router. Really, it's all good! My only nitpick are the buttons below the touchpad which are too firm and require a stronger amount of force to push down than any previous laptop I've owned. There's also a horizontal light strip above the touchpad which I havent' found a way to turn off. Those are my only complaints. This is a great laptop and I will definitely buy another Toshiba notebook in the future.

I wanted a laptop as a backup for my desktop and didn't need all the features of a full laptop, but more than a netbook. Although I've only had it a week (Best Buy 9), I've been spending a lot of time deciding whether I want to keep it since I have a 2 week limit to return it. It is much faster than my desktop, especially accessing the internet. Windows 7 has been a frustrating learning curve (been a heavy XP user)while in a hurry to try out features, access home network, etc. Some of the Toshiba assist programs are helpful in finding features before finding them in Win7. The system has performed very well except for a couple of lock-ups while using Intenet Explorer 8. It did seem to recover ok on reboot. The touchpad took some reading and adjusting (both computer and me) to use the features. The scroll feature is nice, but for some reason, it won't work in all windows, but clicking on the scroll bar seems to get it working in them also. It actually has 3 USB ports (one is a shared eSATA/USB port that I wouldn't have realized if saleman had not mentioned it.

Now for the surprises... the system comes with only a small printed pamphlet for instructions. Toshiba has a user guide on-line which is helpful, but does not provide any help on actually setting up wireless, being sure it is protected using WEP, or joining a home network. Good luck if you aren't a computer guru or have a neighbor/friend that is. Despite what the salesman told me, this is a 32bit system and will only boot up in 32bit Win7 mode, although the cpu is capable of 64 bit. It does not give an option for 64 bit Win 7. Toshiba tech support claims that if I add memory to 4 GB or more, then the option to "restore" to 64bit will show up, even though Toshiba site does not show this model as supporting 64 bit (due to 3GB ram or license limitation?). You might have to buy an upgrade version to gain the option of choosing 32 or 64 bit Win7, so do some checking if you want a 64 bit system. The sound/speaker system is terrible. Besides the speakers sounding like a cheap childs toy, the volume (at max "wheel" adjustment and 100% selection on sound control) is not enough to listen to music, youtube, etc. I had read reviews about poor volume and sound, but thought it couldn't really be that bad..... but it is even worse than described. Sound through earbuds/phones is ok if you don't mind having to carry them with the portable.

Although battery life is short, I have it set on "eco" setting and I get over 2 hours, maybe close to 3 hours, with light usage, such as surfing internet, reading email and help files, typing documents, etc. Since fan only intermittently up to 35% speed with this type usage, I suspect battery time would be much less than 2 hours for high cpu usage games/programs. Over 15GB hard drive is taken up with the hidden recovery partition and the video card uses ram for it's video memory. You can create recovery DVD's, but I haven't determined whether this will actually make recovery DVD's that backup your system at current state (including programs) or just copy the factory setup that is on the recovery partition.

Overall, I decided it will serve my purpose, but be sure you know what features you need. If you want to share/listen to music/youtube etc, plan on using an external speaker or earphones. If you want to utilize the capabilities of 64 bit Win7 to access more memory or run 64 bit software, plan on buying a retail upgrade version.

Recently a Sony tx770p given to me had it's hard drive die on me after 2 months of really getting used to using the laptop. I have had my eye out for a long time for a replacement for it that would be comparable: 11.x screen, 1366 x 768 screen res, light weight, excellent battery life, excellent trackpad, and a particular type of keyboard that is similar to "chicklet style" but slightly different. Well, I finally found a replacement in the person of the Toshiba T115-S1100. Essentially it is a more-than-standard powerful netbook style computer.

Pro's:

1. Screen and size - LED backlit and "TruBright" ... lovely, crisp and clear! And 1366 x 768 screen resolution to boot, which is the minimum screen resolution I find actually usable when doing day to day things like browsing the internet and reading docs (both .pdf and word processing). It weighs roughly 3.5 lbs - nice and light on your shoulder as you carry it around!
2. Battery life - with everything turned off I have been able to get a little over 10 hours doing simple word processing or reading docs on this machine.
3. DDR3 RAM - the machine comes with a 2 gb chip in one slot, with another slot available to upgrade the memory. It maxes out at 4 gb. The ddr3 makes a noticeable difference in netbook level machines in my opinion.
4. Windows 7 Home - that is, a full installation of the OS, giving you way more options than Windows 7 Starter. The OS is only the 32 bit version, but it works fine considering the physical specs of the machine proper.
5. Keyboard - I personally really like the keyboard "style" used on this machine - there is spacing in between the keys a 'la "chicklet style", but the part of the keys you actually hit with your fingers are a teeny bit smaller than the bottom part of the keys, providing extra space and in general a sturdy feel when typing.
6. Trackpad - a pleasure to use. Responsive and just plain well made.
7. HDMI port - for those of you interested in such things this is a plus!
8. Web Cam - a 2 mp camera, a bit more for those of you who would use this than can be found on your average note/netbooks.
9. Intel 4500 graphics card - true, not that great, but still enough to use the hdmi port out and provide good battery life. Much more powerful than most offerings on netbooks in general.
10. ULV CPU - yes, it is single core and it is a Celeron (something many might associate with poor performance or "second rate"). However, the fact that it is an ULV means that not only is it good for battery life but it can actually crank out a fair amount of speed. This cpu runs at 1.3 ghz, 800mhz FSB, and has 2 mb of cache on it. Combine that with the ddr3 ram and a sata hard drive and you get quite a nice bit of speed for a machine its size and price.
11. Hard drive size - you get 250gb, whereas most netbook style machines give you a 160gb. Nice!

Cons:

1. Fingerprint Magnet - Argh! This thing (like many of the black colored machines produced today) attracts fingerprints to the outside of the machine and all around the outside of the screen proper. Frustrating.
2. No bluetooth - would have been a nice extra feature to add in. One should note, though, that built-in bluetooth is not an option on any of the Satellite T115 models available out there. It would be easy enough to get an external adapter though if it were really needed.
3. Mouse buttons - the mouse buttons used are "rocker style", that is, one button over the area that goes downwards on either side. I am not a fan of the rocker style buttons myself and find them difficult to use. Fortunately I had an external wireless mouse already.
4. Audio card - I have read accounts of people who have found the audio card far too weak to send noise out through the laptop speakers, although the sound through the headphones is quite fine. For me this is not an issue as I use it only with headphones. A simple "fix" for this is simply to uninstall the specific drivers for the audio card and opt for the microsoft standard drivers instead - they are reported to be a big improvement over sending sounds out of the speakers directly.

Middle-of-the-Road:

1. Heat control - it can get moderately warm when doing somewhat intensive tasks, like watching video files, for example. Nothing bad, but it is noticeable.
2. Wireless card - it is 802.11b/g rank only. This is kind of "for the par" on netbook style machines in general, but why not put in an N rank?
3. "Fusion" finish in Nova Black - the external decorations on the machine proper - it does not really excite me, but on the other hand it did not turn me off to considering to purchase the machine in general.
4. Indicator Lights - there are nine of them, and they are all on the front of the machine. If they were all active your machine would look like a small string of Christmas tree lights! :) Seriously though, it is not so bad, I simply prefer fewer indicator lights on a machine in general.
5. Standard port offerings - 3 usb 2.0 ports, mic/headphones jacks, sd card slot, vga out port, kensington lock, 10/100 ethernet.
6. USB sleep and charge - basically some software by which you can configure a certain device to draw a charge form the laptop while it is asleep. Not really something I can use or am interested in, but perhaps some may find it useful.
7. Overall Build - the machine is fairly sturdy and the screen and keyboard do not flex much at all. Good build in general overall from a "home line" product.
8. No optical drive - either internal or external. Again, I had one of these already, so this was not much of an issue, but to make dvd recovery discs you will need one.

Conclusion: Overall I must say that I am very satisfied with this little machine. It is an excellent replacement for me, basically a "super-powered netbook": that is, one that portability, connectivity and battery life of a netbook, yet has more options and "umph" than most offerings out there. For a little more cpu speed and wireless N you can pay more or so and get the T115-S1105. For me, however, this machine more than does everything I would want it to do for its size and price.

Had to return the initial laptop because of dead pixel(s). RMA was fast, painless and free. Unfortunately, the replacement also had the same problem- but not as obvious- so we kept it. I bought this without ever trying which was a gamble, but being familiar with Toshiba I trusted it on its name. I was definitely NOT disappointed! With four gigs of ram (upgradable to eight) and 64bit processing, it outperforms my desktop. While the keys are shiny, they are not cheap, and the screen has a great picture. The Pentium T3400 processor would not be my first choice, nor would the on-board graphics, but it all just works great together! Unlike the Satellite L305D I use at work, the streaming video and speed is much better (as well as the speakers). At around 0, I would recommend this to anyone who wants an excellent laptop made to last you into the future, without breaking your bank!

I got this laptop at the Black Friday price of 9.00. It's a great medium size laptop with an AMD M500 which performs about on par with a Core 2 Duo T6600. It also has a 10 key which is really nice. With 3g of RAM upgradeable to 8 (I boosted mine to 4) and 320g of storage it will perform well and store all the music and video I need. I gave 4 stars because it could have a better video card and I prefer the older Toshiba style Touchpad that is indented rather than flush with the casing. I believe that the 32 bit OS it comes with will only recognize 4 gigs of RAM, so it is odd that they assume you could beef up the RAM to 8 with a 32 bit OS. I installed Windows 7 64 bit so problem solved. Also,it is Toshiba! Great quality. If you are looking for a lower priced laptop with a good amount of storage and modern processing ability, this one could definitely fit the bill! A manual to turn it on? Seriously???

I purchased my third Toshiba notebook after dumping a cup of hot tea into the keyboard of my last model.

Lesson learned: Don't fall asleep leaning over your notebook.

Lesson learned #2: Hot tea won't keep you awake when you're really tired.

So, I purchased the Toshiba Satellite A205-S5814 as a replacement. I was able to take advantage of an additional rebate which made the value too good to pass up.

Here's my caveats:

I use the notebook for writing, working and shopping. I'm not a gamer.

I use the notebook exclusively. I prefer the mobility over desktop models. I often travel with this notebook so durability is important to me.

Toshiba notebooks have provided me years of hassle-free use. If they ever build a model that repels hot beverages, I'll consider an upgrade.

I've had this laptop for longer than a week now and I have had literally no problems with it. I chose this laptop because I could not find another laptop that could even compare with the high performance included along with the affordability. This laptop has tons of features, literally tons. I can't explain all the features, yet you can simply look on Toshiba's website. As the other review stated about the wi-fi, I can't say much other than that I have had no problems with the wi-fi so far, none. The wi-fi infact is very convenient and works very well in my opinion perhaps his was just defected. The reason I bought this laptop is because I didn't wanna go over 2 grand, yet I still wanted to be able to play the latest games and still be able to attend to my work using my favorite part about this laptop, MOBILITY!!!!!

This laptop is very simple. I reccomend this for all business users due to the flat-mat style keyboard along with the other many convenient features. These make sending emails, surfing the web, and other everyday tasks extremely easy and adequately comfortable. The screen itself includes a 16:9 aspect ratio along with an impressive 1920x1080 resolution making games and movies look marvelous along with an immersive experience. The soundcard along with the speakers are also quite impressive, leaving my movies and games with an awesome experience. The ports are also very convenient (more than I expected) allowing more possibilities

Now for the performance, I can't complain at all. It runs many of the latest games that I play with shear performance.

This review has already been stretched out long enough, but I'm sure I could get in all the details. In conclusion, if you need a high performance (all the features built in) affordable laptop then I reccomend this laptop to any computer user out there!

This is a great laptop for all my mobile computing needs. The Vista Home Premium allows me to run my local IIS Web Server, ColdFusion 8 Application Server, and Microsoft 2005 Express without any lag. My developer tools for buiding web applications all run great - Adobe CS3 Suite and RedGate Tool Belt. This machine rocks and I still have room to expand my 4Gigs to 8Gigs of RAM. In addition, Office 2007 Ultimate, Project 2007, and Visio puts the cherry on this sundae of a deal. I'm one happy camper.
